Photo Essay ·
Shrines and Pagodas
A short photo essay on colour, banners and rooflines at shrines and temples in Japan.

Shrines and temples reward slow looking. Bright, simple skies and bold colours make them easy to photograph, and the details reward a second pass.
Start at street level
Markets and food stalls around shrines are full of colour and small details. Get close and shoot what is in front of you.

Look up
Layered eaves are an invitation to shoot upward. A wide lens and a steady horizon make the geometry sing.

Notice the repetition
Banners, lanterns and gates repeat in rows. Step to the side and shoot along the line to turn repetition into rhythm.
